wednesday was a long day of hard honest work. the kind of work that knows one reward: 3 hours of cheap beers, deadly cigarettes, and even deadlier bacon cheese burgers followed with the usual landing apparatus: a small, leafy pile of illegal substance, sleeping pills (over-the-counter variety), coupled with 4 hours of music, movies, excessive self-reflection, and the occasional revelation.
the revelation of this wednesday nite was two-fold. in the one, the Bayesian barbarians that have lately plagued my start-up project will at last be exorcised, as the power of analysis services compels them. on the other, seeing another sunrise over the capitol became paramount ... as it could always be the last, who knows.
skipping sleep is nothing new to me, it's a ritual in fact. a ritual that hinges on treating the following day like any other, doing the same things i'd otherwise do, but experiencing them from the perspective of the quietly content walking dead masses.
so the next morning i did what i usually do, made tea (coffee is for heathens), ate a bowel of cheerios and a pear, glanced over my latest jumbling of bits and bytes, and flipped on XM 202, the opie and anthony show. only this particular morning they put on a recording from someone else's radio show.
it was a show called "The Radio First-Termer" hosted by dave rabbit, originally a pirate radio station briefly broadcast from siagon during the vietnam war. the show was hypnotic; if it was the lack of sleep, the drugs, or the subversive droning of the host, i don't know. but i had to give it my full attention.
the first thing that stuck me was the music: santana, the who, cream, sugarloaf, led zepplin, jimmi hendrix, the beatles ... all drenched in fantastic low-fidelity, broadcast from the other end of a rickety, steam powered time machine.
then there was the commentary, "readings from the latrine wall: when I'm home my wife is my right hand. here my right hand is my wife.", "pussy is the breakfast of champions", "fighting for someone else's freedom is like fucking for someone else's virginity."
instructions for ordering a dave rabbit sweatshirt that depicted a well endowed bunny and read, "fuck it, before it fucks you".
official announcements on brothel openings and places where the good drugs were, and places where drugs, good or bad, might not be appreciated.
the show ended with dave rabbit pondering his juxtaposed hunger for a nice juicy hamburger and the genitalia of a willing female.
so here's to dave rabbit, a patriot who had to run his mouth.
"fuck yesterday, forget tomorrow, live today."
